On Friday I posted !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of a brief fire on the Liberty Bridge in Pittsburgh, PA, which turned out to be far worse than was initially thought.

PennDOT !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on Sunday that the fire, which involved the tarps and plastic piping, had burned so hot that a thirty-foot deck-support chord had buckled, and the entire bridge may have collapsed had the fire burned much longer.

Kinja'd!!!

Plans for emergency repairs have been initiated, and parts are being ordered from as far away as Missouri. The bridge will be closed until September 12th at the earliest, and even after a three day weekend of constant reminders that people would need to take detours, which would be naturally busy, this morning’s rush hour was !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! chaotic. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings.

Ugh. I can just imagine the horror of that commute. Here in my little burg the traffic would never snarl up like that by itself so the city takes charge and closes streets to accomplish a miniature version. They make sure that all closed streets run the same direction (north/south or east/west) for maximum impact. It’s our way of feeling a little like a big city.

at least they were actually working on bridge repairs. here, we have one of the busiest border crossings on the continent using a bridge with holes in the deck.

Wow. I thank my lucky stars that a traffic jam in my area is three cars at a stop sign.

That’s only because we need to just let him build a second span. Then everything will be better, promise.

It’s just like the train station building!

It’s a good thing they managed to get the fire put out. Could you imagine if the bridge had actually collapsed? Not only would you have the casualties involved, but also cleaning up the mess in the river, and the reconstruction process.

The construction company at fault is getting charged $200k+ per day for the mess, and righfully so.

Also: your handle is oddly appropriate for the topic at hand.

Yeah, that’s the downside of living and working in the ‘Burgh: no matter where you’re coming from, you will be crossing a bridge or going through a tunnel, if not both. And given how Yinzers drive, you’ll be doing it at 20-25 mph, for no reason whatsoever .
